Art is a wide range of human actions in producing visual, auditory or acting artifacts (artworks), expressing the author's imaginative or technical skill, intended to be valued for their beauty or psychological strength. In their most general form these actions include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the research of the history of art, as well as the aesthetic dissemination of art.

The oldest documented forms of art are visual arts, including creation of images or objects in fields including now sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, and other visual media.

Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, or advertising, it includes the creation of objects in which the technical considerations of use are crucial--in a manner that they usually are not in a painting, such as.

Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, in addition to literature and other media like interactive media, are contained in a wider definition of artwork or the arts. Until the 17th century, the art referred to any ability or mastery and was not distinguished from sciences or crafts.

In modern usage following the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired abilities generally, such as the cosmetic or applied arts.

Art may be distinguished in terms of mimesis (its representation of fact), narrative (storytelling), saying, communication of emotion, or other attributes. During the Romantic period, artwork came to be viewed as "a special faculty of the body to be classified with religion and science".

Although the definition of exactly what constitutes art is contested and has shifted over time, overall descriptions cite an concept of technical or creative ability stemming from human agency and creation.

The nature of artwork and related notions, such as imagination and interpretation, are explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.
